Pin Oak Lane Farm loses a good friend, W. T. Young

I was one of those people fortunate enough to have known Mr. Young.  I met him maybe a dozen times, at Overbrook, at a meeting, or at a special affair.  There was not a man more generous or a man more kind than W. T. Young.  Mr. Young was successful and important.  I was neither, but he always made me feel like I was him and he me.  Bill Young made everyone he knew better for having known him.

Mr. Young was first introduced to me by my friend, Dr. Bob Copelan, and later by Ric Waldman, his trusted bloodstock expert.  I was in the market for stallions to stand and Overbrook had them.  Mr. Young didn't do business, it was more friendship and trust topped with generosity.  When negotiations were initiated, his main concern was for you, not for himself.  He would counter proposals with a question about fairness.  Then he would give more and insist on less for himself.  Once, I remember he objected to my suggestion to pay for the shipping of a stallion east after a lease agreement.  He instructed Overbrook to pay for such service.

An encounter with Mr. Young was always gracious and warm.  He made a point to express his satisfaction with the relationship and the business, almost as though you were doing him a favor, when in fact he was the one being generous.  Then he would offer more help, ask when you would be in Kentucky, and insist you contact him.  Once at the Breeders' Cup luncheon in New York, I remember him reaching into his coat pocket where he kept a list of his racehorses.  He scanned the list to find a possible Storm Cat stallion prospect then proceeded to direct me to Ric Waldman for details.

Mr. Young would always give credit to others; his staff, who he referred to as "the boys"; his stallion, Storm Cat, of whom he said several times "made me look smart".  He closed most conversations with "You make sure the boys are taking care of you.  If not, call me."

Once at lunch at Overbrook, he talked of his business philosophy.  Those close to him who were present knew it well.  He spoke of the other person, of going the extra mile, of doing whatever it takes to make things right even if it costs more.

Mr. Young made me feel like a close friend even though we lived worlds apart.  He just didn't see things that way.  His memory will live on because those that knew him will never forget him.

God bless W. T. Young,

William J. Solomon, VMD
